Substance Misuse and Adolescents: Navigating Resources and Overcoming Barriers to Recovery

Providers in school and healthcare settings see adolescents at risk for substance misuse. SBIRT, or screening, brief intervention, referral, and treatment, is the recommended process for addressing substance misuse. In this recorded webinar, Robin Peyson of RLP Consulting discusses the referral process: what it is and who makes referrals, the effectiveness of treatment, and available resources. She discusses barriers like stigma faced by youth and sub-populations such as girls, including stigma, and best practices for overcoming those barriers.

Substance Misuse and Adolescents:  A Focus on Screening and Brief Intervention

Substance misuse by adolescents is a significant public health concern. In particular, when counseling and screening girls and young women, there are key considerations related to substance use. While staff at schools and clinics know that they should be looking for signs, there is uncertainty about what to do. Screening and brief intervention are the first steps in SBIRT – screening, brief intervention, referral and treatment.
