2015 Travis County Youth Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition Summit

More than 100 area prevention organizations, recovery groups, healthcare professionals, school district personnel, law enforcement, parents and school students met on Thursday,  November 5, 2015, to discuss how by improving and connecting systems – school, judiciary, health, and community – the Travis County community can improve youth substance abuse prevention efforts.

IMG_9128smallThe 2015 Summit was sponsored by the Travis County Youth Substance Abuse Prevention (YSAP) Coalition and Children’s Optimal Health (COH) held LifeWorks’ East Austin facility.

Highlight of the Summit was a Youth Panel with students from University High School and LBJ High School.

–School systems: Manor ISD Superintendent Kevin Brackmeyer, M.Ed.
— Judiciary systems: Honorable Judge Elisabeth Earle
— Health systems: Joe Dias, M.Ed., LPC-S, Memorial Hermann Prevention & Recovery Center
— and Community systems: Dr. Susan Millea, Community Health Systems Analyst, Children’s Optimal Health.

Objectives:

• Improve knowledge of systems and resources supporting prevention
• Identify gaps in systems and resources
• Inform the coalition’s action steps to impact policies

The Choices program is a comprehensive, systemic, multiple high-risk behavior prevention program for high school students. Choices utilizes a novel research-based prevention approach with interactive components such as student, faculty, and parent action groups to assist in curriculum dissemination which targets students’ decision-making skills around high-risk behaviors.   Participants will learn how the Choices program in Houston was integrated  into school systems and created normative change.
