Substance Misuse and Adolescents: Navigating Resources and Overcoming Barriers to Recovery

About this Event —  (Part Two of Two)   –  Providers in school and healthcare settings see adolescents at risk for substance misuse.  SBIRT, or screening, brief intervention, referral, and treatment, is the recommended process for addressing substance misuse.  In this session, Robin Peyson of RLP Consulting will discuss the referral process, such as what it is and who makes referrals, the effectiveness of treatment, and available resources.  She will discuss barriers faced by youth and sub-populations such as girls, including stigma, and best practices for overcoming those barriers.

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  • Explain how to make a referral and navigate community resources,
  • Discuss potential barriers that may arise in the SBIRT process for adolescents and sub-populations,
  • Explain how to overcome those barriers, and
  • Explore resources available to help adolescents, pregnant girls, family members, and providers.

Who Should Attend  —  Health professionals such as nurses, counselors, social workers and others in school and healthcare settings in Central Texas
