About this Event  —  Substance misuse by adolescents is a significant public health concern.  While staff at schools and clinics know that they should be looking for signs, there is uncertainty about what to do. Screening and brief intervention are the first steps in SBIRT – screening, brief intervention, referral and treatment.  In this session, Dr. Lori Holleran Steiker will go in-depth to discuss useful tools and trauma-informed approaches that can be used by health professionals in school and primary care settings working with adolescents.

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the purpose of screening and brief interventions;
  • Describe evidence based tools that work best for the setting and population;
  • Discuss how personal biases could impact screening and intervention practices; and
  • Explain adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), their impact, and which trauma informed approaches can reduce barriers.
