More than 100 area prevention organizations, recovery groups, healthcare professionals, school district personnel, law enforcement, parents and school students met on Thursday,\u00a0 November 5, 2015, to discuss how by improving and connecting systems \u2013 school, judiciary, health, and community<\/strong> \u2013 the Travis County community can improve youth substance abuse prevention efforts.<\/p>\n

\"IMG_9128small\"<\/a>The 2015 Summit was sponsored by the Travis County Youth Substance Abuse Prevention<\/a> (YSAP) Coalition and Children\u2019s Optimal Health (COH)<\/a> held LifeWorks\u2019<\/a> East Austin facility.<\/p>\n

Highlight of the Summit was a Youth Panel<\/strong> <\/span>with students from University High School and LBJ High School.<\/p>\n

\"IMG_9229small\"<\/a>A system discussion panel included question and answer opportunity by:<\/p>\n

–School systems: Manor ISD Superintendent Kevin Brackmeyer, M.Ed<\/strong>.
\n— Judiciary systems: Honorable Judge Elisabeth Earle<\/strong>
\n— Health systems: Joe Dias, M.Ed., LPC-S, Memorial Hermann Prevention & Recovery Center<\/strong>
\n— and Community systems: Dr. Susan Millea, Community Health Systems Analyst, Children’s Optimal Health<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Choices program is a comprehensive, systemic, multiple high-risk behavior prevention program for high school students. Choices utilizes a novel research-based prevention approach with interactive components such as student, faculty, and parent action groups to assist in curriculum dissemination which targets students’ decision-making skills around high-risk behaviors.\u00a0\u00a0 Participants will learn how the Choices program in Houston was integrated\u00a0 into school systems and created normative change.<\/p>\n
