We are inviting youth in middle and high school and college-age youth to participate in a Video Public Service Announcement contest to highlight what they view as the most important substance use issue in their schools and communities and creatively com

municate an effective prevention message to their peers.

All PSAs, either all youth who participated or winners of the contest will be invited to present their PSA at a screening during the Youth Summit on Nov. 5.  The youth will talk about what motivated them to participate in this contest, why they chose the topic they did, and what they learned/gained from the project.

Attention Adult Sponsors — must have signed media consent release forms that include this language:

I, _______________, am the legal guardian of ______________ and have the authority to give consent for my child to participate in media activities with _______________________.  Media activities may include Public Service Announcements (PSAs), news interviews, photos, etc.

I understand that any fictional portrayal of alcohol, tobacco or other substance use reenacted by my child will be supervised and used solely for the purpose of alcohol, tobacco, or substance abuse prevention.  At no point will my child be in actual contact with, or in possession of, alcohol, tobacco, or illegal substances.

As parent/legal guardian of ___________________ I give my permission for my child to be filmed by __________________ staff for potential use in ________________ prevention media.

Youth Guidelines

  • Craft a clear, concise message
  • Video will be up to 2 minutes in length
  • Place text in the middle of the screen
  • Abide by this timeline of due date submissions:  October 2 – concept page (2 different ideas); October 9 – storyboard; October 16 – first cut of video; October 23 – final draft of video
  • Wear solid colors and no logos
  • No tags for social media
  • NO alcohol, tobacco or other illegal substances can be used in the filming
  • Group size up to 8 youth
  • Due to royalties and copyright laws related to music, it is preferable that music is instrumental or original.  If using music posted on royalty-free music databases, please note that royalty-free music sites have restrictions which should be read before using anything from the site. Also all sources must be included in your PSA’s credits.

The Executive Committee and Youth Engagement Work Group will notify contest winners by October 30.
